One thing that has been generating a lot of buzz lately is Google’s new social networking site: Google+. If you are one of the few lucky ones who have finally got an invite into Google+ you might need some tips and basic how-to’s in order to familiarize yourself to the new platform and be as popular on Google+ as you are on other networking sites. Here are few basics Moomkin.com thought might come handy as you start using Google+
1. Fill your Circles and Manage them
This feature forms the core of how Google+ lets you manage online relationships with your acquaintances. Google+ starts with 4 basic circles – Family, Friends, Following and Acquaintances. To bring someone into a circle you simply need to drag the contact into the circle. Once you are familiar to the concept then you can add new custom circles. You can add people to multiple circles if you want. Once you add someone to a circle they get a notification however they won’t know which circle you have added them unless you tell them. Using Google+ has a great advantage that you can customize what you want to share with each circle. It simply mirrors the way you operate in real life. You can also block people from your circles.
2. Manage your Profile
Edit your profile so that people know who you are, as starting 31st July 2011, all profiles will be made public. Edit basic information about yourself, add a profile photo to help people using Google+ identify you. Google+ allows each aspect of your profile to be customized. This is a great way to protect your privacy while allowing you to share the profile with people you want to. The privacy protection features are quite good and you even have the functionality where you can hide your email address and yet allow users to email you by using the “Send an email” button.
3. Share through Streams
You can share everything on Google+ like thoughts, pictures, links, videos, your location etc. The good part is that there is no character limit on your post so you can be as verbose as you please. You can also format your posts to make them more attractive. For anything that you share you can select your audience. Google+ store the default status as to that of your last update which is quite convenient. The advantage of using Google+ is that you can make your updates/status as public, limited to individual circles, group of circles/all circles or even to extended circles. Google+ also allow you to share with someone who is not on Google+ by adding the persons email address.
4. Interact
Google+ is an extremely social place, much more than Facebook or Twitter. You can not only interact within your circle but also with people you follow but might not necessarily know. Famous personalities and other power users are very accessible through this route and often have great comment threads which you can follow. Commenting, liking (through the+1 button), sharing and re-sharing stuff is very easy which you will experience once you start using Google+

5. Hangout
This is one of the most talked about features of Google+ which basically is a group video chatting facility. To get started you need to have a webcam and a working microphone. You will also need to install Google Voice and Video plug-in. Once it is installed you can simply click the “Start a hangout” and start chatting live with up to 10 people simultaneously. You can also advertise your hangout video chat publicly or privately to your chosen circle of contacts. This feature gives Google+ users a great way to interact with groups of friends something which is not that functional in other social networking sites.
