Being part of an organization, also known as work, automatically exposes us to various levels of stress. Work-related tasks, regardless of how small or large they are, generate a pressure on our individual and group performances. We are constrained by time, cost, and a sense of accountability, responsibility, and belongingness. When we realize that somebody or something important makes us accountable for the quality of the end-result, we feel the psychological and even physical stress landing on our shoulders. Whether we like it or not, it is simply our human nature.
On the other hand, the way we learn to deal with stress, is a totally different story. People who don’t know or refuse to manage their own stress in a beneficial way, experience many negative consequences, which result in their mental and physical exhaustion. Psychology provides a whole array of techniques and strategies on how to manage stress adequately.
Here are some of the key elements to take into consideration on how to deal with stress when we find ourselves in those hard-to-stay-calm situations.
1. Train yourself to see the big picture.
Sometimes we are so focused on the deadlines and the quality of our performance that we get hung up on tiny details that take us away from the big scheme of events. Try to remember not to sweat small stuff – this type of compartmentalization could easily overwhelm anyone. Always keeping the big picture on the back of your mind in all stressful situations could help you to diffuse stress-related adrenaline that make your heart pump faster.
2. React to situations the same way you want them to bounce back to you.
In other words, a feeling of stress could be contagious. Ever feel uncomfortable when your boss runs around the office with his head cut off. No matter what he/she is stressing about, it rubs off on you in one way or another, right? Well, don’t be that overreacting person, especially if you are in a leadership role. Lead by example – the calmer and more logical you retain yourself at times of stress, the more trusted and reliable you portray yourself in the eyes of everyone around you. Only you have a control over your own reactions and nobody else can change that.
3. Remove yourself from anything/anyone negative.
If situation allows, it is best to keep yourself away from any sources of stress. Remember that anything or anyone who generates stress could rub off quickly on your status quo. However, if it is unavoidable to be a part of a stressful situation, try to express verbally what bothers you, and don’t bottle it up because eventually it will blow up and get you to the point of becoming physically ill. High levels of continuous stress have a strong potential to influence your short and long term physical condition.
