At one point of our lives, pretty much all of us have been involved in some form of negotiations. It is our human nature to attempt to win when bargaining for our own good, and when it does not work out in our favor, we feel a sense of failure. How do we get to be on the winning side of the negotiations, both on professional and personal levels?
Negotiations are a form of communications that we, as successful professionals, could learn to master and become confident about. Unfortunately, how to become a winning negotiator is not something that we learn in school or our parents. Lawyers, politicians, salespeople, are the professionals who are very sharp in negotiations, and we could learn various aspects of this skill from their careers and experiences. Here are some of the online resources that outline the most practical techniques in mastering your negotiations skill.
1. Attitude means everything.
For a negotiation to be a ‘win-win’, both parties should feel positive about the negotiation once it’s over. This helps people to keep good working relationships afterwards. Displays of emotion are clearly inappropriate because they undermine the rational basis of the negotiation and bring a manipulative aspect to them.

2. Stay firm in closing the gap.
Many negotiations break down because one person has a number in mind, and the other person has a number in mind, and one or both parties adopts a negative attitude about closing the gap. To get closer to the desirable level, stay firm and keep in mind that there is always room for more negotiations, and ultimately, more incentives in your favor.

Have confidence and be sure that you can keep control at all times. Aim highly, but don’t underestimate the opposition. If you are selling something, be persuasive and offer some incentive to keep the customer interested.
