Daily economic news reflects how challenging it is for recent graduates to land their first employment, let along within their academic major. More and more it appears that the days of choosing a follow-your-heart major should be placed on hold, in order to be able to survive this brutal job market, or lack thereof. What is there to do for a college student, who is about to face the real world? Nowadays, every company is seeking to fill in one position by one super experienced professional who will be replacing five to ten employees across multiple departments, due to budget cuts.
The only thing that is left to do, before you step outside the safe walls of the academia, is to find and sweat through ‘a-still-marketable’ major, and hopefully, still be within the realm of your academic strengths. Do a thorough homework on what is still considered hot on the job market for the next five to ten years, before you carefully choose your major. On the other hand, don’t go to the extreme of picking a field that is completely outside of your comfort zone. In other words, if you are good at creative writing, your niche, don’t go for Pre-Med. Instead, try to apply your creative edge to something half-way parallel, like E-Commerce Marketing, where some writing and research skills are a plus.
