Q: Do you think the education you’ve invested in helped you on the road to success?

Undoubtedly, the education helped me to define my overall individuality. I can’t necessarily say that I was taught acting through the academics. Nevertheless, studying at the university, I have received tremendous support from the School’s Dean, who provided me numerous opportunities to participate in very important and creative college initiatives. I was offered a platform that gave me an opportunity to work and discover my strengths, talents and interests. I have organized shows for KVN (literal translation ‘Club for Humorous and Witty,’ impromptu on-stage comic show); a variety of other staged activities and shows. These opportunities created a foundation for my acting career; enhanced my crafted skills. Undoubtedly, if I did not go to KBTU or any other college, I would not have reached even the minimum of the achievements that I have reached up to now.

Q: Are you planning to continue your education? Have you thought of going abroad for your further education?

Certainly, I have been offered to join New York’s Academy of Art for 2 years; however, a number of circumstances have kept me here, in Kazakhstan. First, I am trying to build a solid foundation here. I will continue to learn even when I am 40 and more!

Q: What was the “breaking point” in your career that made you decide to pursue your career?

During my freshmen year of college, I was approached in a hallway by one of the leaders of our class and got invited to participate in KVN (aka impromptu comic club). This was the breaking-point in my acting career. Since then, I have starred in the TV series “Brothers;” in the featured “The Tale Of Pink Hare”as a leading role; and in another most recent featured film “Home Sweet Home,” as a supporting role.

Q: Were there obstacles that you had to overcome in order to get where you are now? How did you overcome failure?

Certainly, I had obstacles in my life! And I am grateful to be living my life. I have been through virtually everything: hardships and disappointments, and almost empty pockets. As played this saying is, it is however very true – what doesn’t break me, will make me stronger! Indeed, this saying has a great energy and a living truth. As far as those obstacles concern — mainly they came from those who didn’t believe in me, negatively criticized me, and told me that I act inappropriately. On the other hand, if it were not for these naysayers I may not have been where I am today. The more success one achieves, the more critics one attracts. I always try to find positive sides in a negativity.

Q: Can you tell us of an interesting story from your professional life?

I had a rather interesting incident in my life. I had a challenge to get admitted to college on a scholarship. I managed to put it together and proved to myself that I could do it; it made me work so much harder! The admission process was extremely competitive. A scholarship was an unachievable dream even for the best students in the country. I had to get this scholarship, or else I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my education in Almaty city. I needed that scholarship not because it was prestigious, but because it was the only way I could pursue my higher education degree. Times were hard and my family could not afford sending me to another more expensive city to study. I am from Karaganda-city myself. This one particular naysayer kept telling me not to build any castles in the sky; and that it was unrealistic for me to study in Almaty. I persevered and proved not only to that discouraging person, but also to myself that if I truly wanted something, I can achieve it through my hard work. And I did, I got accepted, I received a scholarship, and exceeded my parents’ expectations.

Q: Do you consider yourself a professional actor?

I do not consider myself a professional. I believe that any professional would never say that he/she is a professional, and knows his job from A to Z. I am just a human who lives and learns something new every day. I cannot call myself a professional for two reasons. First, I have no acting education to say that I am a professional actor. And secondly, I think that there is so much more to constantly learn in acting that I will always be learning something new.

Q: Since you have so many fans and followers, do you consider yourself a celebrity?

I do not like to call myself a celebrity because a celebrity is someone who is impossible to reach. I try to have people perceive me as an ordinary person and not as a celebrity. Relationships are very important to me and I always try to make myself available to those who are trying to reach me. I am may be becoming a little more recognizable in public, a little more famous because I am in this industry, but I do not consider myself a star or celebrity.

Q: As a young professional, what were some of the mistakes that you’ve made and what have you learnt from them?

As for the mistakes, I am extremely critical of my own professional work. Watching my first job in “Brothers” I have found a lot of moments where I could have fixed something. Unfortunately, it was too late because the camera had already captured them. As I mentioned previously, I continue to learn everyday and I try to learn from my mistakes. I’ve learned from the first film and because of that I think I made fewer mistakes in my second film “The Tale Of Pink Hare” and it was easier to work too.

Q: How do you measure success? Do you consider yourself successful?

Success could have a very broad definition. It could be on professional, personal, and even material levels. You could have success today but maybe not tomorrow. Currently if we talk about my acting career, I could say that I have two successful featured films that are popular among Kazakh youth. Any beginning actor would consider it a success. I just started my acting career and already believe that the first steps towards my professional success have been made. With a regard to a personal life, I believe finding a lifelong companion is also a success. I have not found her yet; therefore I am still unsuccessful in my personal life. How do I measure success? It is when you are not embarrassed of yourself and your achievements during college reunions.

Q: What is one advice that you can offer to your readers?

O: Despite the criticisms and doubts continue to trust yourself – this will lead you to success. Never lose faith in yourself! Believing is the key that guides us through life.

Q: What do you do for fun?

Honestly, I spend my free time inside acting studios working on various acting projects. My work is my vacation and I enjoy it full-heartedly. There are times when I want to relax and do nothing. Work hard — play hard! When I have those free moments I spend them in variety of ways: from being horizontal, to playing paintball, and even skydiving, going to movies or clubs with my friends.

Q: The characters you played in your first 2 movies seem to be very similar. Do you personally have anything in common with them?

Of course, I think any actor gives a piece of himself/herself to the character. But the most important quality of an actor is to recreate all of his internal principles, outlooks and perceptions, in order to match the requirements of a script. Yes, I have something in common with each of the two characters. Similar to the first character in “Brothers” television series, I am a patriot, I love my homeland, my parents, and consider myself a great Samaritan. As for the second character Erlan, we share similar destinies. Just like my character, I moved from another city, Karaganda, and had to get used to new people in a bigger city, and at times I faced identity crisis.

Q: Aside from your work, what else do you do?

I keep myself busy with innovational and social projects that develop and promote my country. I believe that these initiatives could help our country get recognized on a global scale.

Q: What is your favorite 1) gadget(s), 2) software(s), 3) website(s) that makes your life easier and more productive?

I am addicted to Apple Macintosh products! I am also active on social media sites, like Vkontakte, Facebook, Twitter and Yourvision.
