Juan Jose Reyes is the Co-Founder of Picaspot.com, a website that helps travelers find the best places to take pictures. Juan Jose and a friend saw a need in the market when they noticed that a very common question people ask in travel forums was “Where are the best spots to take pictures in….(fill in the blank)”. So they created Picaspot.com to put the answers to all those questions in one place.
“Our intention was to create a free resource where photography enthusiasts of all levels can learn all about a location before they go,” said Reyes, an avid photographer himself. “Many times there is just not enough time to walk around for hours looking for a good photo spot. That’s when Picaspot.com can be useful,” he added. It can be used by the amateur photographer going on a trip or by advanced photographers to find locations that are best for professional photo shoots, such as weddings, model or commercial photography. People can share their favorite street corners, an original angle to photograph a famous landmark or a little known park outside the touristy areas. The purpose is to take great photographs.
Picaspot was founded in 2010, is free and available to everyone
2. Do you think the education you’ve invested in helped you on the road to success?
Absolutely. The knowledge in every field doubles every 3-5 years so we have to double what we know every five years just to stay even. Our education (knowledge) will always be one of our most important assets in life. I am a physician and also a Health Care Consultant. I got my Medical Degree from the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion in Paraguay where I’m originally from, my MBA Degree from the University of Colorado in 2006 and I am currently in the process of getting my certification in HealthCare Information Technology because I see that the future in Health Care is in all the technological advances that are being developed and I want to be part of that.
3. What was the “break point” or an AHA moment in your career that made you decide to build your own brand?
For me it was when I was studying for my MBA. I was learning about the uses of technology and the how to use the Internet to deliver Health Care and during that time I read the book “The World is Flat” by Thomas Friedman. It changed the way I thought about creating a business because it made me realize that with the Internet the world is a level playing field and anyone can create a great company no matter where they are in the world. All kinds of resources are available to everyone who decides to look for them and has the guts to trust in themselves
4. As a young professional, what were some of the mistakes that you made and what did you learn?
I always thought that I had to choose one career and stick with it all my life so one of the most important things I learned is that we are not tied to just one career. That used to be the case decades ago, but not anymore. Changing careers can be very hard unless we have the correct frame of mind and keep growing and learning.
5. How do you measure success?
I think success in life is measured by the number of meaningful relationships we have. It’s all about connecting and developing meaningful deep relationships with other human beings. I see a lot of people achieving a lot of things in their life such as reaching the highest position in the company, earning a high salary etc. but many times the same people destroy a lot of relationships along the way trying to achieve those things and when they get there they find that they are alone and unhappy. I think that if we take the time to connect with people and reach a point where are able to say that we have improved the life of anyone that came in contact with us then we can say we were successful.
6. What is one advice that you can offer to your readers?
A lot of entrepreneurs worry about not having money to develop their business. But money is everywhere, what is lacking is great ideas. If you have a great idea and there is a need for it then spend the time developing that idea and work every day to increase the content and value that you can offer. Then money will flow to it effortlessly.
7. What do you do for fun?
I try to do things that allow me to be creative; Photography is one of those things. I take a lot of pictures in fact I try to go out and take pictures almost every day. I carry a camera with me wherever I go. I also like to play my acoustic guitar.
8. What is your favorite gadget(s), software(s), website(s) that makes your life easier and more productive?
I have a Mac as desktop and I use it a lot specially for photography. I also have a Sony Vaio laptop very light and portable. My favorite software is without a doubt Lightroom. I prefer a Blackberry over an iPhone.
10. Who would you like to see featured here and why?
I would like to see here Tony Hsieh from Zappos because of his thoughts on happiness and John Mackey from Whole Foods for his ideas on conscious capitalism.
