Feeling stagnant in your idling career? No matter what you do, feels like your ideas are not being taken seriously? You are not being perceived as an asset to your company? When your sixth sense is whispering to you that it’s a good time to move on, chances are, you probably need to re-evaluate your own professional goals. Where do you want to go from here: try something completely new with no direct experience; or revamp your stagnation through furthering your professional education?
The former requires a higher risk, with probable mental and financial setbacks. The latter requires time, but if well invested, will give you chances to reap immediate professional and individual rewards. There is a wide array of resources and opportunities out there, through which you could continue to develop your professional skills and expertise. The key is to keep learning, keep developing your know how, keep moving forward! Here are some of the outlined sources to take into consideration.
1. Get a certification. Take evening or virtual courses.
In many career fields there are various certifications and professional ranks that could be obtained through completing courses and passing examinations. Once you have that certification, or that highly desired skill under your belt, you will open many more doors for your career advancement. Some educational giants, like Kaplan or University of Phoenix, are globally available and offer an enormous arsenal of courses for virtually every career field out there.
2. Stay up to date on industry news and innovations. Subscribe to industry-specific publications.
Be interested in what is going on within your field on a larger scale. Knowing your job function, focusing exclusively on your specific role within the company is important; however, having a more global, a large-scale outlook is an intelligent move. Study the role of your organization, and the role your industry places in the global economy. The more information you know from the bird’s eye view, the more you will be perceived as a global thinker, an innovative intelligent leader. Exuding intelligence draws respect and appreciation.
3. Learn by teaching others.
I discovered that I learn quite a bit about myself professionally and personally by teaching others. Verbally reiterating your know how to somebody who lacks that knowledge, is another unexpected channel of educating yourself and filling your own voids. Volunteer to train new employees, to write company’s educational materials. Along those lines, it helps to master your PowerPoint skills. Write and attempt to publish as a subject matter expert.
4. Be a well rounded professional.
Lastly, continue to be interested and learn the world outside your professional realm.
Read daily news; be aware of the world outside of yourself. Be curious what kind of hot stuff your kids and/or your parents are into. Be savvy of the pop culture world. Travel; put yourself outside of your comfort zone. These things build you into a better person not only on a personal level but, certainly, make you stand out as a highly credible and intelligent professional.
